In this episode of Making Sense of Money, presented by P1FCU, we tackle a serious and often overlooked topic: financial abuse in relationships.

Tanis is joined by Shelly Meisner from the YWCA, who shares her experience and insight after more than two decades working as an advocate and coordinator in domestic violence services. Together, they explore what financial abuse really looks like,  from controlling access to money, hiding assets, and sabotaging credit, to more subtle forms of control using finances as leverage.

You'll hear about warning signs to watch for, myths that need debunking, and real-life examples of how abusers can trap partners using money. Shelly also offers practical resources,  from financial counseling and credit repair to community support programs like Moving Ahead and guides like Hope & Power to help survivors rebuild.

This episode is a reminder that money is power, and access to finances often means access to freedom. Whether you're concerned for yourself or someone else, this conversation brings light to a difficult issue and connects you to help.
